Knowmia ends soon: Changes to video storage starting May 20

Posted March 21, 2022 in Educational Technology News, JMU Libraries News

You may have been using Techsmith Knowmia, a video platform for recording and sharing lectures online. Knowmia is being discontinued by the vendor on July 29, 2022.

Canvas Studio is JMU’s new platform for recording, storing, and sharing instructional media. Many of the features that were available in TechSmith Knowmia, such as viewing analytics and interactive quizzing, are available in Canvas Studio. It is available to all JMU faculty, staff, and students who have a Canvas account. Learn more.

What you need to know about your Knowmia videos:

What you can do now:

If you want to… …you should take this action:
Record new lectures for use in summer or fall 2022  Use Canvas Studio. We recommend Studio for recording & sharing lectures because:

-It is available to all JMU faculty, staff, and students who have a Canvas account.

-Many of the features that were available in TechSmith Knowmia, such as viewing analytics and interactive quizzing, are available in Canvas Studio.

-You can configure Studio to receive copies of the Zoom recordings you save to the cloud.

Download and store your videos from Knowmia For now, we recommend you download a copy of your Knowmia videos and store them in OneDrive for long-term storage.

Note about quizzes: We recommend you manually save a copy of your quizzes in Knowmia, as there is not an automatic way to export them. Please read our export guide for more information.

We are working with Instructure to transfer active media content from Knowmia into Studio this summer. We expect this process will take several weeks, and we are targeting late July. We will share more details as they are available.

Share instructional videos you are actively using Use Canvas Studio or illumira to share recordings you are actively using for teaching.
