Open Access Publishing Options at JMU

Posted October 21, 2024 in JMU Libraries News

Did you know that publishing your work in an open access (OA) venue increases the global readership and has a positive effect on citation?

At JMU, there are many ways to make your work openly available:

  1. JMU Scholarly Commons: Faculty, staff, and students can share their work with the world via the Scholarly Commons, JMU’s institutional repository. This year alone, it has recorded over 1 million downloads! Learn more about the benefits of adding your work to the Scholarly Commons.
  1. Publisher agreements: The number of JMU faculty publishing open access articles continues to grow, partly due to publisher agreements between JMU Libraries/VIVA and Wiley, ACM, ACS, MDPI, PLOS, Springer, and other publishers. Most of these agreements shift the costs that publishers levy on open access publications to the Libraries. By bearing these costs, the Libraries is helping to make open access publication more accessible to authors across campus.
  1. Article Processing Charge (APC) fund: To support open access publishing in a journal with whom we lack a publisher agreement, we have joined forces with JMU Research, Economic Development and Innovation (REDI) to provide a limited APC fund.
  1. Open access book publishers: Some open access book publishers, like Punctum Books, don’t charge any fees to authors to make their work open access! Learn more.
  1. Open access ebook publishing at JMU: Use Pressbooks via JMU Libraries to publish your own OA textbook or white paper, making it freely available to students, fellow scholars, and practitioners around the world.
