Use any combination of text to include title, composer(s),instrument(s), genre.  Include opus or other numbers using only the number (if not found, omit the number and search again).  After performing the initial search, filters can be applied to further tailor the search.  Much more is available online – search in the Scores and Sheet Music Databases.

Specific Instrument

Use or combine any the instrument and other identifying information (composer, genre, title words, etc). Unfortunately, for music, the catalog requires precise spelling.

Example: To locate the piano prelude, “Les fees sont d’exquises danseuses” by Debussy:

Search box from the Music Library homepage with debussy piano preludes in the input field and the filter set to Scores.

Standard Ensembles

Use or combine genre terms like “string quartet” and other identifying information (composer, genre, title words, etc).  The catalog requires precise spelling. Include opus or other numbers using ONLY the number.

Example: To locate Haydn’s string quartet no. 76: NOTE: Include opus or other numbers using ONLY the number. *If not found, omit the number and search again.

Search box from the Music Library homepage with haydn string quartet 76 in the input field and the filter set to Scores.

Specific Song or Aria

Use or combine significant words form the song or aria title and the composer’s last name if you know it. If not found, search the larger work (see last example). The catalog requires precise spelling. Use quotation mark to search words as a phrase (If words are misspelled or not in correct order, there will be no results). If not found, remove the quotation marks.

Example: To locate Puccini’s “O mio babbino caro”, perform this search:

Operas, Oratarios, or Other Large Works

Example: To locate Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi”, perform this search:
