We are happy to share that JMU will soon offer a new and improved test scoring system to replace Scantron. Introducing: Gradescope Bubble Sheet!
Benefits: Gradescope Bubble Sheet offers a more efficient and cost-effective method for grading multiple-choice exams, saving faculty members’ time, speeding up test score turnaround time, and streamlining grade-posting processes.
- Flexible form layout: Bubble Sheets may be printed at JMU and include custom forms and adaptable layouts.
- Easier scanning and processing: Faculty can use standard office scanners (or even smartphone cameras) to capture completed tests. Two scanners have also been purchased for the Gabbin Assessment & Testing Center specifically to scan Gradescope Bubble Sheets.
- Self-service: With Gradescope Bubble Sheet, faculty can grade tests themselves without relying on a centralized service. Support for scanning and grading tests will also be available in the Gabbin Testing Center.
- Analytics: Gradescope Bubble Sheet offers more advanced analytics and item analysis tools compared to basic Scantron systems.
Timeline
- Fall 2024: Developing resources and testing the new system.
- January 2025: Both Scantron and Gradescope Bubble Sheet will be available.
- May 2025: JMU will fully transition to Gradescope Bubble Sheet. IT Test Scoring services close permanently on May 20, retiring Scantron.
Support and Resources
- Self-help: Comprehensive support resources are available on Gradescope’s website. JMU specific resources will be available on the Libraries and IT webpages to provide guidance for using the new system.
- Testing center: The Gabbin Assessment & Testing Center (available Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm) will be equipped with two scanners and trained staff to assist faculty with grading the bubble sheets.
- Workshops: We are currently developing training materials and planning workshops to support this university-wide transition, which will be available early in the spring semester
